Cinco de Mayo in Houston

I will not be in Houston for Cinco de Mayo this year (couples trip to Cali) but I still wanted to share my top picks in Houston for Cinco de Mayo! Fiesta all weekend long!!

NO CINCO DE MAYO IS NOT MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY! There I said it!

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is the date the Battle of Puebla occurred, on May 5th 1982. The Mexican army defeated the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla and is celebrated annually! I’m Mexican, and my fiancé is French so I like to tease him about it! This holiday isn’t celebrated as much in Mexico, as it is in the US – specifically Texas – but I’ll take it! Just be sure to support local businesses and put your money where your mouth is!

Cinco de Mayo falls on a Saturday, so celebrate all weekend long by attending these events around town:

Piñatafest – A FREE community event in the East End Cultural District celebrating the ancient cultural tradition of piñata making. The event will showcase sculptures inspired by traditional piñatas, and feature family friendly activities, crafts, and local vendors. More info can be found here.

East End Houston Mural Ride – Local artist, grant writer, and outreach coordinator, Celestina Billington and BikeHouston will host a social art ride thorugh East End Houston to explore murals. The ride will cilimate on the Navigation Esplanade for the celebration of Piñatafest. It’s a FREE family-friendly ride, find the deets here.

Cuchara – Ever seen Lucha Libre? Special guests Kemonito and Micro Man will be coming from Mexico City and putting on a wrestling show you don’t want to miss out on. Get your tickets for just $20 by calling the restaurant directly or stopping by in person. Guests age 21+ only for this wrestling event. Cuchara is located in Montrose at 214 Fairview St.

El Patio AKA Club No Minors– This Houston staple will have drink specials all day, promo giveaways, live music, and more! Their Facebook event page can be found here. El Patio knows how to throw a party, I went for National Margarita Day and the house was LIT!

Cinco de Doggo Fiesta – Humans and perros will come together to “pawty” at Axelrad in partnership with BYOD. RSVP is required to attend this outdoor event, FREE for BYOD members, or just $10 for non-members. Plenty of margaritas for the humans! Fiesta details here.

Tipsy Trap Yoga – I was SOLD at Selena!!! Trap and flow, 60 minutes of yoga, and Selena, followed by Tito-rita’s.  Open to all levels, ages, and sizes. All proceeds go to Yoga N Da Hood, a non profit organization dedicated to making wellness affordable for everybody. Me siento “muy excited”, get your tickets here!

Cinco de Derby – Combining Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby means Wicklow Heights will be offering all day margarita specials, all day mint julep specials, live music, and food. Facebook event link can be found here.

A variety of vendors, food samplings, and musical acts will make this an event you don’t want to miss! This is a family friendly event, but there will be areas for adults age 21+ only. VIP tickets grant you access to a margarita and mezcal tasting, get your tickets here.

Picos Cinco de Mayo Weekend – Picos is starting the fiesta early and kicking off Cinco de Mayo weekend with a tequila tasting on May 3rd. They will have “larger than life” margarita shakers on the 4th, and a huge tented adult playground on the 5th!
