Get Lucky Beer

Ok, I’m pretty sure the Irish did NOT invent green beer, looks like St. Patrick’s Day is just another holiday we celebrate in the States for an excuse to wear green and drink some booze. I mean have you seen a bottle of Guinness? It would be impossible to turn it green! I always wondered how they made the beer so green and a bartender once told me they put a lot of food coloring into the beer. I mean, I have no problem with that, but I figured there had to be another way. Well I’ve had this jar of spirulina powder in my pantry for months and I finally have a reason to use it!

In case you’re wondering, spirulina is blue-green algae aka a “superfood.” It was used by ancient cultures as a daily food source since it’s an excellent source of protein and iron. It’s organic, vegan, and you can easily sprinkle it into smoothies, baked goods, yogurt etc. In this case we’re going to put the powdered spirulina in a beer to create a super beer!

Green beer to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
Ingredients
  • 12 oz bottle light beer
  • ⅛ tsp spirulina
Instructions
  1. In a pint glass, add spirulina powder.
  2. Carefully pour beer into glass by tilting the glass to the side and slowly pouring the beer until the bottle is empty.
  3. Stir with a spoon and wait for the foam to settle.
  4. Enjoy!

Just FYI 1 -12 oz bottle of Corona = 148 calories.

Less is more, you literally need a tiny amount and the beer transforms! Stir it a little and watch it turn from golden yellow, to a nice vibrant green before your eyes! The key is to use a light beer, like a pale ale or a blonde. I used a bottle of Corona and I didn’t notice a difference in the taste, although it was a little more foamy than usual. All in all, think of this beer as the SUPERFOOD of all beers! Drink responsibly friends, and cheers y salud to all!
