Torchy’s Tacos – Westchase

Happy Taco Tuesday!! In honor of this sacred tradition I thought I would share my thoughts on the new Torchy’s Tacos Westchase located at 2675 Wilcrest Dr. Houston, TX 77042. They opened their doors less than two months ago and the traffic has been non stop ever since! They are located in the heart of the Westchase District and right next door to Whole Foods, smart move! If there’s anything working millennials love more than Whole Foods is a nice taco fix on a Tuesday! The space is pretty large, and is setup to where you stand in line to order then find a seat. A waiter brings out your food and the bartenders bring out your drinks.

Their menu has several options ranging from the usual fajita tacos, to the more adventurous ones such as ahi tuna and fried avocado. My goal is to try them all, slowly working on them one visit at a time! I opted for the fried avocado which comes with hand-battered avocados fried and served with refried beans, pico, lettuce, cheese, and a side of poblano sauce. They serve this on not one but two corn tortillas, needless to say they know exactly what they’re doing! The avocado comes out crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, a vegetarian dream come true! The baja shrimp tacos come with hand-battered fried shrimp served with cooked cabbage slaw, pickled jalapeños and onions, queso fresco, cilantro, a lime wedge, and a side of chipotle sauce. The key to fish tacos is to keep it simple, and I appreciate that they use complementary ingredients, such as the cooling lime, cilantro, and queso fresco. These tacos really hit the spot!

Pro Tip: “Get it trashy” = No lettuce, add Green Chile Queso instead.

I can’t resist enjoying bomb tacos without a refreshing adult beverage, and the Torchy’s Tini was so tempting! The bartender was incredibly friendly and poured them tableside! How cute are these shakers?!

Pro Tip: Make it “Classy,” AKA a $3 upcharge for your top shelf tequila of choice but well worth it! I ordered mine with Don Julio – it was seriously right up there with Trudy’s famous Mexican Martinis.

FYI their sides are big enough to share! I ordered a side of street corn and loved the off-the-cob roasted texture that you would expect from elote. So much flavor is jam packed in each bite, so just get it you won’t regret it! The green chile queso and chips were the star of the entire meal, they come with a generous serving of chips – I like to keep my queso to chip ratio pretty even and I’m glad they don’t skimp out on either portion!

This location has happy hour M-F from 3-6 pm, I’m determined to make it out at some point! Until then, peace, love and damn good tacos!
